Cocoa

I thought you might like to have a progress report on Cocoa, our adopted Field Spaniel.

Cocoa

As you can see, she is quite beautiful. Her feathering has grown in to be very thick. We selected Feb 14 for her birthday, so she is now two years old. We have learned the Field Spaniels don't fully mature until 3, so we have our teen-ager for another year. She has met two others of her breed that live in Cloverdale.

Cocoa

Our feeling is that Cocoa may very well be the best dog we have ever had. She is very smart and a very pleasant dog. She gets along with most everyone (canine and human) in our neighborhood, although she is very wary of strange men and somewhat leash aggressive around strange dogs.

She is great friends with one of our neighbors, who owns two Wheatens and with whom we walk nearly every day. At the dog park, she plays hard with a couple of special friends, most notably a beagle about the same size. When we brought her home, she figure out house training almost immediately and, since day one, with no work on her part, she goes and lies down on a rug when we sit at the dinner table. No begging, whining or other nasty behavior.

Last summer, Cocoa went through assistance dog training at Santa Rosa and completed the course. She has been visiting a senior's hopme in Heladsburg and also been participating in a reading dog program with the Healdsburg Boyus and Girls Club.

Healthwise, Cocoa is doing great. Her weight is exactly where it should be for her breed. We did have a scare with some low blood sugar but changing her dog food seems to have done the trick there.

When we were watching the Westminster show the other night, they remarked that Fieldies were the rarest of all spaniels...we like to think of them as the best kept secret. We really love our Cocoa and she seems to be very happy here.
